Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

support shotfiring operations on at least two occasions, including:

checking blast holes against blast plan

handling explosives and accessories

securing and isolating blast area

priming, loading, stemming and tying explosives

carrying out site clean-up

processing reports and/or records.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply relevant documentation and procedures and confirm work activity is compliant.


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key legislation required to support shotfiring operations, including requirements relating to:

storage and segregation of explosives

handling of the shot

key procedures and documentation required to support shotfiring operations, including those relating to:

blast plan

site security plan

Australian standards and codes of practice relating to shotfiring operations

handling explosives and accessories

securing and isolating blast area

priming, loading, stemming and tying explosives

types, physical and technical characteristics, uses and limitations of explosives and accessories

basic techniques for applying site geological and survey data

principles and techniques for blast hole checks, including those relating to:

hole depth and length

blockages

direction

presence of water

site environmental requirements and constraints, including those relating to:

chemicals

airborne contaminants, including dust and fumes

noise, vibration and airblast overpressure

principles and techniques for identifying and responding to relevant hazards and emergencies

site requirements for cleanup, completing maintenance records and reporting requirements

basic techniques for communicating job activities with others.
